So, I grew up with a Dad who always gardened and cooked, and I want to be like that too! So my self-assigned project for next spring is to create a container garden. I have been looking up ways to make really inexpensive earth boxes (roughly $5.00 to make one, rather than $50.00 to buy one) and upside down hanging planters.

You can pretty much grow any vine vegetable upside down. From what I read, diseases and parasites have a harder time getting to the plants when they are off the ground... So we will see how that goes. Here is a list of the things I want to plant:

1. Raspberries
2. Blueberries
3. Zucchini/Squash
4. Cucumber
5. Habanero/Jalapeno
6. Tomatoes (duh!)
7. Runner/pole beans
8. Red peppers
9. Lettuce (green leaf/romaine)
10. Kale (I LOVE kale soup...)
11. Carrots
12. Potatoes (might be harder, but they should grow in an earth box.)
13. Arugula (I love this. It's like peppery spinach. So good on pizzas...)
14. Eggplant
15. Broccoli

I know it is a ton of stuff, and my list will probably be edited quite a bit depending on the space I have when the time comes. I want to start preserving my own food for the winter. We will see how it goes!!

But I am SO excited.... Only eight more days until I take my trip back to Columbus. Mike and I are camping all the way across the country. My Chevy Cavalier is literally FILLED to the brim. This is going to be interesting....

This weekend I ran down to the second hand book store around the corner, and guess what I found! A copy of R.L. Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses. It has all the same Jessie Wilcox Smith illustrations as the copy I had when I was younger. This was truly my favorite poetry book when I was a little girl. The Land of Counterpane was my favorite!

Also, I was looking at animation blogs earlier, and it made me think of what my favorite Disney short was when I was little. I can honestly say it is "Thru the Mirror." It played on our VHS of Alice in Wonderland in the beginning before the movie.

This is for a company called Sound Property Advisors. They are a property management company in Seattle, WA. Just took inspiration from the Puget Sound (hence the name)... That's the long and short of it!

These are for a river fishing website. The bottom is the header, and the four others are buttons for the website. I got the idea from vintage envelopes and stamps. I thought it was a good motif for fly fishing because I associated relaxing outdoors and fishing with old memories. I thought old mail was a good way of trying to portray that. (And I was at the part in Forrest Gump when he gets all the letters he sent Jenny returned. Haha.) I wanted to do a handwritten font to make it look like the address written on the envelope. The date stamp has the city in which the site is located and the dates it is open. Let me know what you think!

It is a work in progress. There are going to be butterflies, too. It is a painting I did on cardboard, and then I messed around with it in photoshop. I have been super stuck and I know it is weird, but I am trying to branch out and try new thangs.

These are some of the updated website sketches for one of the companies. Let me know what you think, please! So the icons would only show up when you scroll over one of the names. I think it gives it more of an interest as opposed to just clicking on the words. A lot of rental and leasing sites just have a picture for their website. I think having a really simple, monochromatic/analogous color schemed drawing gives it more interest, but still seems streamline. Feedback, please!!!!!

And some more progress. The background is too blue; I think, since I want to do three of them, they are each going to have an analogous color scheme, depending on which bugs I put in them too. I am going to put more than one bee in there, as well. This was just me putting place holders. I don't really like that one just by itself. Bad spot for it. I need to put two more. Ok, but I like the value of the dark against the hair, but I need to loosen it up a bit and make it more purple. Oh, and my homes, Einstein.

I hate how bad the quality of my camera is! GEEZ LOUISE! Hope these will suffice. The first sketch is one I want to take to final to go along with my girl paintings. I want the dead doe to have a bunch of legs; I think it is a good way to depict the perversion of femininity. I am also proud of how well I drew the girl out of my head! The deer kind of looks like a mangled dog, but I can only get better! The second one is just some hand lettering that I did. It's about my stitches, and that is probably a disgusting way of describing the boo-boo. The third one is of the mean Thai restaurant owner that works in the same building as I do. I've been researching animals and gold fish are a "plea for stability." The last one is just Thomas J. Wish they looked better!

I feel terrible about the photo quality but until I can figure out this darn scanner, this is what I have to do. These are concepts for a poster for a pair of singers who sing a range from opera to swing music. Here is the website: www.belduetto.com

Inspiration was to be taken from old French posters, but I had to add a modern feel to it. So I pulled the graphic shapes and quality from old Toulouse Lautrec type posters, but am planning on making it cleaner and brighter. This is just one of four posters; this one is for the "Romance" show.

I haven't had a scanner or photoshop for a week, so I have resorted to doing really quick sketches in this little book. I am sitting in Starbucks; I have a big sketchbook too, but I'm not going to hold it up in the middle of the place and take pictures on my webcam. Hahah.

In addendum, I love it here. The whole scenery is breath taking. There are a lot of different types of people to pull inspiration from here. One thing that is weird getting used to is not being around people who make art all of the time. The girl I am staying with, Devon Watson, is a photographer, so I am very thankful for that.

I've been to a lot of bars, coffee shops, stores, and little vintage boutiques and have met a lot of people just by throwing out some conversation. It is comforting to know I am not alone out here. I applied to the Art Institute of Seattle and Cornish to be an admissions rep, so hopefully that goes somewhere. I have looked into renting and perhaps starting a collective with some local artists and people who have moved here from back home. Wish me luck. I would love to get a little studio above Pike Place Market, but I am afraid the funds just aren't there yet.

I went to Whidbey Island for the fourth; needless to say it was beautiful.

Seeing mountains has been one of the most exciting things that has happened to me. I can't wait to see Portland and the Pacific Ocean.

I have been sketching. I worked on a pretty large self portrait that I ended up hating. I am thinking about investing in a nicer scanner. Hey, guys. This is for senior illustration majors. We, John Olson, Shannon Moore, and myself, organized a controlled, and we mean CONTROLLED, open forum to discuss your experience at CCAD as a part of the illustration department. Bring your concerns and possible solutions to discuss together as a class. Let us keep building upon an institution of which we can all be proud. Please leave negative attitudes at home. One of the most vital experiences for us as illustrators is to stay connected in a positive manner. So bring your business cards! Pat yourself on the back for a job well done! We have all worked SO hard to get this far.

Just a further note from myself: I want to stress that this is going to be an organized meeting. We only have one hour to discuss a lot of things. We are telling you this far in advance so you can get out your frustration and start coming up with solutions. I will also say, even though Directions was a little tough for us, it is a beneficial event that people at the school work very hard to set up. HOWEVER, it is just not a good outlet for illustrators to bank hopes of job placement. Directions is a sympton to a larger problem, and this is what we are going to discuss. Shannon, John, and myself have come up with a couple of possibilities for an alternative to Directions, but we need input. Obviously, this initial meeting between all of us is the first step to many more. The topics of upmost importance are going to be:

1. A possible alternative or addition to Directions, either through a separate event or more recruiting (even though the former suggestion is probably best.)

2. The curriculum and the different types of illustration there are in the current market. Right now, the curriculum favors a very traditional, freelance market. We are the largest, sometimes second largest, major here at the school. We need to be required to take more advertising and graphic design classes such as In Design and web classes. There also needs to be some classes that specialize in different kinds of illustration. CONCEPTING, FREELANCE, GRAPHIC DESIGN, STATIONARY, etc.

3. There is a problem with the staffing. We love all of our professors. I have had AMAZING teachers here at this school. But with that said, art is supposed to be about all perspectives, and we need a wide diveristy in age, gender, race, and genre in the department.

Try and ponder these issues and think of POSITIVE solutions. We hope very much to see you Tuesday!

I just sort of feel like rambling for a moment, so any of you who take the time to read past this, thank you! So, my friend and fellow artist, Alonzo, and I were hanging out and swapping interesting youtube videos. He showed me "Money" by a group called N.A.S.A. Check it out; it was SO cool when I watched it. David Byrne, the genius from the Talking Heads is in it. I really was inspired by Fairey's artwork; he's been around forever, but it took until now to really, really appreciate his design sensibilities, which are pretty spectacular. I think it definitly motivated me to start this Obama piece, even though it's a different thought process. My friend has this really awesome, old propaganda poster from China with Mao's face on it. It is so happy looking, and just fake! I have been looking at it for two years and finally I was pushed to do something about it!

I was watching Mars Attacks last night, and needless to say, I forgot how amazingly campy and just cool that movie was! I might have been looking a little to in depth, but I like how Tim Burton made the human race in that movie a really peaceful one in the beginning. Nobody faught, everyone got along. It was pretty surreal. Haha.

I have really been digging painting with my wacom tablet. I am in love! It makes me feel like I am putting the humanity into technology when I make art with it. How arrogant, right? I think drawing while using a piece of advanced technology really makes me appreciate other art forms that use a machine, photography for instance. Especially digital photography because it is manipulating modern technology and making it less cold. People are so smart.

So, I am doing a Communist type poster about Obama. It isn't that I think he is a huge Commie Socialist. I just was looking through the children's book isle at Target the other day, and there are SO many kid's books about him. Now, let's all not forget, he is still just a politician. Very well spoken, charasmatic, and probably pretty level headed. I voted for him. It just reminded me of how everyone in China is rumored to carry like Mao books with them everywhere.

Anyway, I had a meeting about graduation today. Freaking out am I. Oh, Jesus. I can't believe it!
